A simple local media server
For some years there are those old DVDs, spread in several boxes, waiting to be watched. I have some movies I just can’t get rid of, but I also don’t want to keep an unused DVD player standing in the tv cupboard. Let’s face it: I prefer choosing the movie by using my mobile phone and not by playing disc jockey.
Meanwhile, I got my hands on a LincStation N1, put some storage inside, and made it work as a simple NAS. It’s easy now to digitize my DVDs and uploading them to a local network share. The LincStation can now run a MiniDLNA server to share my videos to any UPnP/DNLA compatible client. What I really want is to watch the videos on my tv, though. But in fact we’re talking about my Chromecast. Chromecast only requires a compatible client or app which tells it about the video server.
One of those clients is the BubbleUPnP for DLNA/Chromecast Android app, which can cast my videos to the Chromecast on my TV.
That’s all I need: a server with my video files, shared via DNLP, cast via app to the Chromecast.
It just works!
